My work represents my continuous inner turmoil from repressing my emotions. Throughout my life, I’ve been met with constant hostility when expressing my thoughts, opinions, and feelings. This rejection of my person paved a dire need to express any and every emotion I had, but
ultimately never came to fruition due to the fear of being met with the same backlash. This continuous avoidance of expressing my thoughts and feelings created an inner unrest, of wanting to freely express myself without being met with hostility. My work's main focus is on the use of the figure, for its ability to capture movement and its effectiveness in communicating emotion. I choose to use traditional media such as graphite, charcoal, and ink for their simple yet bold power to fully communicate my disdain. The figure is something every human possesses, so in its utilization, I feel it can help the viewer create a sense of connection and empathy with my work.

Nicole Reyes is from Miami, FL, and has been attending Interlochen Academy for one year as a postgraduate student. Her work revolves around the repression of emotion and how it’s conveyed through the figure. She uses the figure as her primary subject because of its ability to capture movement and its effectiveness in communicating emotion. She uses traditional media such as graphite, charcoal, and ink for their simple yet bold power to fully communicate the disdain from not being able to freely communicate your emotions. Since the figure is something every human possesses, in its utilization, Nicole feels it can help the viewer create a sense of connection and empathy with her work.
